While not as common as in dogs, external parasites, such as fleas can be found on cats. In our area, fleas are not rampant but they are around. Prevention is the best medicine for protecting your feline friend. We recommend treating outdoor cats, especially during the summer months. If your kitty loves the great outdoors, contact our clinic and we will recommend the best treatment for them.
Fleas are a type of external parasite that lives on the outside of furry friends. They are extremely small, wingless insects, that jump onto their hosts and feed off their bodies. An infestation is hard to control, as an adult fleas can hop from surface to surface and lay eggs in carpets, furniture or even bedding allowing for re-infestation.
Fleas are often associated with excessive scratching, which can cause skin irritation, hair loss and overall discomfort. They are known to cause skin issues, cause allergic reactions and can transmit other diseases.
Flea prevention is an important part of maintaining your cat’s overall health. A flea infestation can be extremely uncomfortable, can cause medical issues and be transmissible to other animals.
There are a number of treatments that are very safe to use for flea prevention in felines of any age. Products that are purchased in a retail store and over the counter are not generally recommended, as they are not tested to the same standards a veterinary product is.
