Microchipping is crucial for pet safety, ensuring a higher chance of reunion if they ever get lost.
Microchips are a form of permanent identification. Microchips have helped reunite countless lost pets with their owners.
Most of us don’t plan to lose our companion animals, but life happens! Perhaps the gate was left ajar. Maybe a loud noise caused your pet to flee unexpectedly. Perhaps you were a victim of theft or bad timing. The truth is that once your pet is lost or stolen, a microchip seems like a great idea. As a responsible pet owner, you do everything you can to keep your pet safe so plan for the unexpected. Get your pet microchipped, and keep your information with the company current.
A microchip is just that – a tiny piece of storage. Each chip has its own unique serial number, this serial number is linked to your personal contact information. The microchip is implanted underneath the skin, usually between the shoulder blades with a needle. This is a safe, routine procedure. Your contact information is then registered to the microchip company by yourself, or an agent from a veterinary clinic. The microchips are detected by “scanners.” Every veterinary clinic and shelter should be equipped with these.
When a scanner passes over the chip, it will alert the user. The chip’s serial number will appear on the scanner. The user will then contact the appropriate microchip company with the serial number detected. The microchip company will then contact pet owners, or pass information to the user of the scanner. If the owner’s contact information is correct and current, the owner is contacted.
Microchipping is relatively inexpensive, we recommended this procedure as an add-on during your pet’s spay or neuter procedure.
